Mercy Magic Edges Friends in OT



On Thursday March 30th, the Mercy Magic won their conference game against the Friends school in sudden death overtime 13-12.  The Magic remains undefeated with the win at 4-0.

The Magic took the lead early in the game, pushing past the Friends school 3-0 after scoring 3 goals within the first 3 minutes of the game. Senior, Irene Lunt added the first goal for the Quakers and a second goal followed after a penalty against the Magic sets up sophomore, Chessa Crosse at the offensive end of the field.  Crosse takes  a quick shot in the middle of Magic defenders to give Quakers their 2nd goal.

With the Magic now leading 3-2 with 13:24 left in the half, the Quakers look to even the score and Lunt is there with her 2nd goal of the night.  Lunt, led the Quakers with 5 total goals in the game, four were scored within the 1st half.

At the half, Friends would increase their to lead 7-4  and Mercy would struggle to score again until junior, Riley Rumbly gives the Magic their first goal following the half. On the score, Rumbly, recieves an assist  from freshman midfielder Mallory Price. Price sails a pass to Rumbly from the opposite side of field and Rumbly slashes to the goal for score.

It was just the jump start the Magic needed to get back into game. The Magic tightens their defense packing the box to keep the Quakers from scoring. But the Quakers remained patient, attacking the wings and making passes on the outside to open up the zone.

The Quakers were able to muscle 5 additional goals in the half and led 10-5 before the Magic would score again. The Quakers scored 2 more quick goals in the game to lead the Magic 12 -8 with a little under 7:00 minutes remaining but would not see another goal after the Magic goes on a 5-0 run to tie the game.

With 2:19 left in regulation, junior Kaitlyn Kozlowski ties the game at 12-12 after a body check penalty  on Friends gives Mercy possession of the ball.

Friends receives possession but Mercy freshman goalie, Shay McKenna makes a save and sends the game into overtime.

In overtime Kozlowski makes the winning score going coast to coast after Friends school fails to score on opening drive and Mercy fails to convert a score on a separate possession. The Magic win with a walk off score 13-12 and keeps holds on to their undefeated record.

The Quakers fall to 2-1 on the season.
